Womanizer vs Satisfyer vs Sona

In a perfect world, we’d never have to choose between sex toys. We’d have them all, and all at once, without the need for sleep and without having to be put on a saline drip to rehydrate when we were finished. But this ain’t a perfect world, and instead we’re forced to choose. So here’s the choice: which is best out of the Womanizer, the Satisfyer or the Lelo Sona?

The Womanizer – does the performance redeem the awful name?

The original Womanizer caused something of a buzz when it was released three years ago. The main comments online were of the “I hate the name but I’m kind of intrigued” variety. And then positive reviews started to roll in, and the name was forgiven.

The original was given a redesign, the price jacked up, and the result was the Womanizer Pro W500, which is the one we’re looking at today.

Let’s not dwell on the redesign too much, shall we? It is, to say the least, hit and miss. The black and grey version looks cool, the red and orange one looks like your auntie’s drapes. That Swarovski button detail is an acquired taste – a taste we definitely haven’t acquired yet. (It looks like a much-regretted bellybutton piercing.) What’s more, a clit vibrator like this needs a lot of lube to be comfortable, and the firm, round body with its ABS covering can be super slippery in the exact moments you don’t want it to be. Like trying to hold on to a wet bar of soap.

But, when you can get a grip on it, it feels good. And it should: it’s the most expensive of our three competitors – you could buy a Satisfyer AND a Sona for the same price.

Satisfyer – I can’t get no… Satisfyaction?

There’s no way around this, so we’ll get this out the way up front: this thing is ugly. It’s like a big, cheap Apple Airpod, and it has all the charm of something you jam awkwardly in your ear too. It looks like a Teletubby’s travel hairdryer. And if you were completely new to sex toys, you probably wouldn’t know which end to use. Oh yeah, and the ‘y’ in the name. If there’s one thing we hate, it’s fake typos. Unless it was a real typo. In which case… cool.

That said, there’s a lot to like about the Satisfyer, and for this comparison, we’re looking only at the Satisfyer Pro 2. The most interesting feature is that it really wears its heart on its sleeve regarding the way it works: by creating a vacuum around the clitoris and kind of sucking and vibrating it at the same time. Some women love this sensation, some women have hated it. It’s subjective, as are all matters of love, but it’s roughly the same sensation as the Womanizer above. So if that’s the sensation you’re seeking, prepare to be Satisfyed because this is half the price of the Womanizer. And it’s waterproof.

The ugly and slippery ABS plastic body is once again in attendance, but at least this one is easier to hold than the Womanizer.

Lelo Sona – An orgasm, Sona or later…

Sona is the latest development from Swedish sex toy powerhouse Lelo, who have been a bit quiet of late. Suspiciously quiet. It’s been a while since they released an all-new sex toy, and we don’t know what they’ve been doing all this time. Wading around the Nordic fjords looking for inspiration, or flagellating themselves with birch, or something distinctly Swedish like that. Probably lost in IKEA. Wherever they’ve been, we were excited to see and try this new toy, Sona, because it marks a bit of a departure for them.

Sona, it turns out, isn’t quite like the two clit toys above. They both work by creating a vacuum, Sona uses some kind of oscillating pad that creates pulses and waves instead of vibrations. They say it’s designed to translate the pulses throughout the entire body of the clitoris, including the parts under the surface. We can say that is certainly true. What we can also say is that it’s an intense sensation.

What’s more, it’s made from a single piece of silicone with a very Lelo-ish back panel, so it’s completely waterproof and doesn’t succumb to the whole ‘trying to hold onto a slippery fish’ thing like the other two, which are both ABS-bodied.

Then there’s this whole Cruise Control thing. So there’s the Lelo Sona, and the Lelo Sona Cruise. The Sona Cruise has this really powerful motor that reserves 20% of its power until it’s pressed firmly enough against your clit that the motor begins to struggle – and then it dumps that 20% power right into the motor, so that the power never seems to dip. It’s cool: the other two definitely suffer from power drops under pressure.

Comparison conclusion

 

The lucky thing about a choice like this is that there is no bad one. Any one you choose will give you a pleasurable sex toy, once you get used to how your body responds to the new types of sensations.

But Sona really blows that other two away. Honestly, we really struggled to fill out the ‘cons’ section. It outperforms the other two at every turn, except on battery life, where it only gets the silver medal. But honestly, who can use any of these products for more than an hour and a half without needing to take a break to take some replenishing vitamins and nutrients on board to replace the ones you lost? It embarrasses the other two in every other respect.

Sona might be late to the party, but now it’s arrived, the life and soul.
